Breast cancer remains the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women worldwide, and its global burden continues to grow. New research highlighted by CNN suggests that the number of breast cancer cases could exceed 3.5 million annually by 2050, underscoring the urgent need for stronger screening programs and accessible treatment infrastructure.
The findings, based on an international analysis published in The Lancet Oncology, examined breast cancer trends across 204 countries and territories over more than three decades, revealing a widening gap in survival between high-income and low-income regions.
A Story of Two Global Realities
In many high-income countries, decades of investment in screening programs, early detection technologies, and advanced treatments have dramatically improved patient outcomes.
Between 1990 and 2023, breast cancer mortality declined by nearly 30% in these countries.
However, the situation is very different in many lower-income regions. Over the same period, breast cancer deaths nearly doubled, reflecting serious challenges in healthcare infrastructure, diagnosis, and access to treatment.
According to the study, approximately 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023, resulting in 764,000 deaths worldwide. Nearly one in four cancers diagnosed in women globally that year was breast cancer.
These numbers illustrate how profoundly healthcare systems influence survival.
The Role of Healthcare Infrastructure
Experts point out that screening alone cannot reduce mortality if the necessary treatment systems are not available.
Breast cancer care typically requires a coordinated continuum of services, including:
- Diagnostic imaging and screening programs
- Surgical treatment
- Radiation therapy
- Chemotherapy or targeted therapies
In countries with well-developed healthcare systems, these services are usually integrated and accessible.
But in many low-income regions, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, the infrastructure remains limited. As of 2020, only about half of African countries had access to external beam radiotherapy, the most common radiation treatment used for breast cancer. Even where services exist, capacity is often insufficient for the population.
Without access to comprehensive treatment, even patients who receive surgery may face limited survival benefits.
The Cost Barrier
Economic barriers also play a major role in global disparities.
Targeted therapies such as trastuzumab, widely used to treat HER2-positive breast cancer, can cost the equivalent of a decade of average income in some low-income countries. This reality leaves many patients without access to life-saving treatment options.
Addressing these disparities will require investment, policy commitment, and global collaboration, along with stronger health systems that support the entire cancer care pathway—from detection to treatment and long-term management.
What Individuals Can Do
While large-scale policy changes are essential, individuals can still take important steps to manage breast cancer risk.
Lifestyle choices such as maintaining a healthy weight, reducing alcohol consumption, staying physically active, and avoiding tobacco can help lower risk. However, experts emphasize that lifestyle factors alone cannot eliminate the possibility of developing breast cancer.
Regular screening remains one of the most powerful tools for early detection. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that women begin mammography screening at age 40 and continue every two years until age 74.
Most breast cancers diagnosed in developed healthcare systems are discovered through routine mammography screening, which significantly improves the chances of successful treatment.

The growing global burden of breast cancer highlights the urgent need to expand access to modern breast imaging technologies, screening programs, and treatment infrastructure.
